What is the difference between tutus and pettiskirts? What are the 6 types of tulle fabric?
In order to properly advise you on the difference between tutus and pettiskirts, you need to know the difference between the tulle materials.
Believe it or not here is a significant difference between tutus and pettiskirts.

Pettiskirts are created with multiple layers of soft chiffon fabric. Chiffon is an incredibly light weight durable fabric. It is usually used on apparel made for weddings or special occasions. It is a flowing and airy elegant material. The feel of it is soft and silky. Children with delicate skin would not feel irritated by the fabric and the skirts can be worn all day long.
Pettiskirts tend to cost more than tutus because of the quality of the fabric used. Pettiskirts are in high demand because they are fashionable, fluffy, fun and fabulous.
Tutus on the other hand are made from tulle. Usually the main material used for tutus such as the ones we carry are 100% nylon. Tulle itself comes in approximately 6 forms of fabric. Many people when starting out do not realize that there are different textures of tulle fabric. YouTube tutorials on how to create tutus only give you advice on how to create the tutu but they do not tell you what tulle to use. The fibers and weaves of the tulle actually determines the stiffness of the tulle.
1. Silk
2. Rayon
3. 100% Nylon (also known as bridal illusion tulle)
4. English Net - A blend of Polyester and Nylon
5. French Tulle
6. Italian Silk
The tulle we use is 100% Nylon. Most of our tulle is matte tulle but we do tend to add a little glitter and shiny tulle as well. Our tulle is a soft fine nylon tulle with small diamond holes.
Silk Tulle is a delicate and soft fabric. It is one of the most expensive tulle fabrics and has the softest drape. It is not commonly used for wedding veils because this fabric is considered to be very delicate. Silk Tulle needs to be fluffed.
Rayon and Nylon are stiffer than silk and are used more for tutus and event decor. It is less expensive than silk making them a desirable option for consumers. You can use these tulles for craft projects, clothing, dance wear and even bridal wear. There are multiple uses for Rayon and Nylon tulle. The fabric is sheer with a crispier feel. Nylon and Rayon wrinkles more.
Stiff nylon tulle is used more for classical ballet tutus and holds its shape well. It is durable but tends to feel scratchy when worn.
Bridal Illusion or what we call 100% Nylon is soft to the touch. It has a similar texture to panty hose. The tulle is translucent and photographs well.
English Net Tulle is a blend of polyester and nylon. It is used just as often as Bridal Illusion for wedding veils because it is soft and tends to hold a better shape than silk tulle. English tulle drapes similar to chiffon and is also transparent. Due to its polyester and nylon blend, the fabric is a little heavier.
French Tulle is the most fragile and delicate of them all. It is the hardest silk tulle to work with. French tulle also has a similar texture to panty hose.
Italian Silk Tulle is 100% silk but has a wider netting and coarse texture.
Soft tulle is known to have smaller holes, whereas those with larger holes are more coarse.
